Over 700 veterans, their families and friends filled up the 99-acres of the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery in Williamstown for the dedication ceremony on Aug. 22, 200S.

The Kentucky Department of Veteran's Affairs began construction in Grant County in March 2007 and cost SS.2 million. The Grant county Industrial Development Authority donated the land for the cemetery and the U.S. Department of Veteran's Affairs will reimburse the state for construction, and the state will pay the operating costs.

This is Kentucky's third State Veteran's Cemetery. Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West in Hopkinsville, has interred more that 900 veterans since opening in 2004, and Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central in Radeliff, has interred more that 500 veterans since opening in 2007. Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North phase one willprovide capacity for interring 5,746 veterans and their spouses.

Cathy Taylor is the admisntrative specialist while jerry penick is the maintenance supervisor and chris Hammonds and jerry Morris are the caretakers.

The criteria for interment at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North include:

  • Any member of the armed forces who dies on active duty.
  • Any person who was a U.S. citizen upon entry in the Armed Forces of an allied nation in a conflict in which the U.S. had been or was later engaged and who was a U.S. citizen at the time of death.
  • Any veteran discharged under conditions other than dishonorable.
  • Reservists and National Guard members with 20 years qualifying service who are entitled to reture.
  • Reserve component members who die from injury or illness incurred while on active duty.
  • ROTC members who die from injury or illness connected with attending an authorized camp or cruise.
